Welcome

TO BRASILHIS DATABASE, THE WORLD'S LARGEST REPOSITORY OF INFORMATION ABOUT BRAZIL IN THE HISPANIC MONARCHY (1580-1640).

BRASILHIS Database arises as a different way to answer the question:

What was the impact of the Spanish Habsburg government on the territory of Portuguese America?

In order to get to the deeper aspects of this broad question, the Database has been organized, in a first phase, around three main sections: characters with their networks of personal relationships and displacements, documental references and bibliographic references, connected to each other.

In the second phase, another serie of categories has been added, such as Properties, Legislation, Iconography, Means of Transport, Identities, etc., to complete the complex information that the sources offer us about this territory and this "crucial" period.

Persons

This section gathers information on persons who had some contact with the territory of Portuguese America (Estado do Brasil, Estado do Maranhão), during the period in which the Kingdom of Portugal was ruled by the Spanish Habsburg monarchs, from 1580 to 1640. Data on the biography of the persons, such as place of birth, date of birth and death, position(s) held, social, political and commercial relations and on the circulation of these persons in the different territories have been compiled. To retrieve the information, it is possible to search in each of the fields. In the case of searching by name and/or surname, it is recommended to write part of the name and/or surname, not the full name, in order to optimize the search. All persons have at least one associated documental or bibliographic reference.

Personal Networks

The relationships between persons in BRASILHIS Database, whether political, social, military or commercial, are presented here in the form of graphs with the help of the GEPHI software. It is possible to access both the general graph representing the more than 2,000 relationships already identified, as well as each of the persons and their individual networks. An extraordinary tool for social and relational research on Portuguese America in the years of the Union of Crowns. In this section you can search by type of personal relationship or by person.

Person´s travels/itineraries

There is no globalization without circulation. Following this principle, BRASILHIS Database presents in this section, in a geolocalizable way (LEAFLET software), the travels/itineraries of persons, whether for political, social, military, commercial or other reasons. It is possible to access the graphical representation of all the trips/itineraries identified, as well as to filter and select the itineraries associated with each individual person. An extraordinary tool for researching the circulation of persons from Portuguese America during the years of the Union of Crowns, and, therefore, for understanding the global dimension of the period.

Through the new categories in BRASILHIS Database, researchers have access to multiple aspects of daily life in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries in Portuguese America, as well as relevant information on legislative, institutional, military or religious aspects. All these categories are related to the previously existing persons and bibliographic and documentary references.
