A graduate of the universities of Evora and Coimbra was Dr Aleixo de Abreu. He was appointed personal physician to the governor of Angola, Joao Furtado de Mendonça, and resided in Luanda from 1591 to 1604. From Angola, he moved to Salvador to take up appointment as physician to the governor-general, Diogo Botelho.
